encrypt a string

hello, im a student -- so please dont laugh lol ... i need to create a very simple program that takes a typed in string from the user (any length the user chooses), encrypt the string, then output the encrypted form of the string to the users screen.... no need for anything fancy, just a project im stuck on -- if someone could help me out with some code that would be wonderful ... thanks :)
