Attachments to posts
The [ ccode ] [ /ccode ] markup doesn't really function well ... you can't cut and paste code easily.
Many times, it would help if we could put in an attachment to a post. I know this could be a big resource hog. But it's No. 1 on my wish-list.
Space could be allocated to each user (say 1 MB) and he can upload source/zip files. Pointers can be provided in the post to this area.

We don't normally provide this function on the Discussion Groups because then it would become incumbent upon us to personally check out each file for viruses and such. At this point, we just don't have the man power to undertake that responsibility.

# 2 Re: Attachments to posts
Hi Tom,
Attachments don't have to be scanned for viruses manually. Hotmail allows users to run McAfee on attachments before they download them. Think that would be possible ?

I never heard back from the original poster. Does anyone else have any more information on how to do this or is this not a big issue with many of you?

# 5 Re: Attachments to posts
I think that there are two issues. One is binary uploads and the other is text uploads. I do not know how to restrict binary uploads, but at least text would be much safer. I think that if possible, it would help to be able to upload source code text as attachments, and that will probably satisfy most requirements.
# 6 Re: Attachments to posts
The upload source code text as attachments capability would probably also help with the printing problems. It is safe to assume that it is not likely that anyone will want to print binary data.
# 7 Re: Attachments to posts
In my experience, we often get to a point where there is some "ok, send me your code, I'll have a look then". And since we all live in a Microsoft World, it's usually a zipped Visual Studio project.
I would suggest allowing attachments in private messages only.
I'd refrain from allowing attachments in normal posts - you would probably get many uploads with "What's wrong with this code" and 100k attachments.
Well, there are still some problems to discuss - quotas etc. (I can imagine a ton of problems there).
