Flames ?! Wheres the moderator?

Is it me or in the last week(s) we have seen TOO MUCH of flaming posters?

I think it's a waste of resources to draw a thread like: "You're wrong" "I'm not" "Yes you are and you're st*p*d" "No I'm not"..

Where's the moderator?

Tom Archer usually responds when he is aware of things. He might say that he cannot look at every post. So perhaps we need to have an official method of notifying the moderator about problems. When I had my first problem that was a flame type of problem, when I tried to report it to the previous moderator, I sent him a link to the post and the initial response was that he could not find the post. I think that Tom Archer would be able to find a post if we sent him a link, but if it is not possible for him to find a post using a link we send him, then we need to know how to refer to posts so they can be found.

Hi,
Yep, there are sometimes flame peaks. But usually they are settled down by some guru's wisdom. I don't think we always need Moderator's help. Some well chose, calm words (best as "private message") usually work like a magic spell. Of course we should contact Tom Archer, when there is some _real_ problem.

If some guy annoys me, I usually have a look on his profile and previous posts ("ask-answer-rating", usual style) before I even start to care.

About the "previous moderator":
Chris Maunder was listed a long time as moderator, even when he was no longer involved with dev-archive (after their move to earthweb). So probably he didn't get your note.

Peter

I said "the initial response was that he could not find the post" meaning that Chris Maunder got my message and his response to my message was that he could not find the post I was refering to.

Oops, sorry, sometimes I'm faster at writing than reading.

Sorry guys!!! I've been heads down on this whole conversion to our new system and haven't had the time to come up for air to deal with these day-to-day issues. ***Thankfully***, I think my part is finished for the next few weeks and starting this this evening I can get back to posting content and dealing with issues like this. I'll definitely look into this issue this evening and take the appropriate actions.

Tom

Perfectly answered. I try to walk a fine line between helping and dictating. What some people think needs my attention with regards to an insult from others, I generally just shrug off as someone having a bad day and being a bit bitchy.

I **do step in*** when someone has crossed the line and has become overly abusive or engages in obviously unprofessional conduct, but for the most part I try to keep a low profile and let the professionals of this group moderate themselves when it comes to their dealings with one another.

Besides, I figure you guys would much rather have me spend my time writing code to improve the site, posting articles and fixing site bugs than slapping people's hands for every little thing.

Cheers,

I'm here. Just buried fixing a major Comments bug.

Since we get literally hundreds of emails per day, we don't have the resources to check each one personally. Therefore, we rely on you guys to personally manager yourselves in a manner befitting your professional status.

Having said that, please understand that I'm not saying you don't and I do in fact appreciate your post as this is the correct means of drawing my attention to issues.

Would you please email me (tarcher@mindspring.com) a couple of examples of the threads that you're speaking of? Usually, if there's a problem, then its one or two people that are consistently continuing a pattern of abusive behaviour and just a couple of posts will allow me to track down which users are causing the problems.

The last thing we want at CG is for developers to feel as though the forums have become some sort of "kiddies on parade" so if you get me those URLs I will definitely look into them.
