HOW MUCH DO PROGRAMMERS GET PAID
How much do programmers get paid? I am 13 and I can program in Visual Basic, I am learning Java and C++. Will this help in experience? How much should I get paid if I am like in my 20's and am a programmer?

Current market rates here (Ireland) are 250 to 300 per day.. That's about 75000 to 90000 per annum.

In Singapore, fresh diploma holders get a starting monthly salary of around S$1700, which is around S$20400 per year. For fresh degree holders, they will have around a starting pay of S$2500 per month, which calculates to S$30000 per year. So in Singapore, qualifications counts more.

If the "Open Source Movement" takes over, you may
not get anything! Look at the KDE web site.
They have a section that describes whether or not
they are paid for their work. One person named
Wolfram Diestel says: "at the moment I only get
money from my wife for caring for my daughter"
The KDE site is www.kde.org

Seven years from now.. who knows? And right now im assuming your american so you dont care what programmers in russia, singapore, china, or timbucktwo make. Im 21, like you I started programming when I was about 11. I just got into the field, after wasting a couple years pursuing something I shouldnt have. But I entered the field with a starting salary of about 40,000 ($20/hr) a year. MY past experiences have helpd me alot. Dont stop programming, it will pay off someday... and the whole open source thing is not going to take away opportunities for thouse programmers that are good. My biggest advice is to focus on one thing and become the very best at it. If you are very good (one of the best) at what you do, people are always going to be willing to pay you for your services. If, you branch out into every possible area in the software and IT world, you could know a little bit about ALOT of stuff, which I find less valuable than those that know ALOT about one very particular technology. However, taking that route slightly limits you on what you can do, what your qualified to do. But like I have said, if you are VERY good at it, and you build a solid reputation, and a good resume, you will always find someone, somewhere looking for someone just like you.
Good luck

Hi Joe, i totally agree with you on specialising on a specific skill and be best at it. But unfortunately, i must say that this is a very difficult task to achieve in different countries. For example in Singapore, most companies actually requires that you know a bit of these and a bit of that. Even the education system here is alot different. For my case, i took a diploma in computer studies and guess what, the course had subjects in economics and accounting.
Good for you, you get to start learning programming early, but in Singapore, one would need to complete 10-12 years of primary and secondary education together before he/she could choose his/her career path. i.e learning specific skills. By then, he/she would be around 19-21 years old. And that is not even at degree level.
I think this is getting a bit off topic, so my overall view is the same with yours, but perhaps different situations has its own restrictions.

I understand what your saying. Cultural requirements can make it difficult. I dont know really at all about the culture in singapore or the amount of free educational material there is available. But my first programming education was an intro to basic book that I borrowed from a public library and a commodore 64 computer that was purchased for about 250 bucks. This lasted me a couple years till I was able to save enough money doing odd jobs to get a 386 PC. I dont necessarily mean developing an educational career path through instatutions as much as I mean finding what is right for you and what interests you the most. Just for my own curiosity sake, are those types of materials readily available, is that type of self education encouraged in singapore, is it a very rigid and strict schooling routine. As far as the economics and so forth that went along with your diploma, I dont see it as a major proble, even our degrees here require us to go through a heap of meaningless history, and art classes. But all in the name of creating a well educated individual.
Thanks for your input. You have sparked my curiosity.

It really depends on experience and what parts of the country you live in. It also depends on it you are an employee or a consultant and if you are a consultant do you go through an agency or are you independent? The best way to find out is to go to www.dice.com or www.headhunter.net and you can see current job offers from all over the country with their starting wages/rates.
In Arizona, as a consultant with 7 years experience working through an agency I get $45 an hour ($90k year). If I went independent it would be $65-$75 an hour($120k-$150k). As an employee I would get about $85k. Obviously independent consulting offers the most money but it is much more difficult to land contracts. I could work in California for a lot more but then my house in Arizona for $250k would cost at least $500k

Hi. I work in Italy as employee. I have about 4 year of experience, but not in same factory. I started with about the equivalent of 800 dollars a month. Now I get 1350.
Special thanks to Lothar "the Great" Haensler. Come back soon, you Guru.

Thank you for your good info.
I agree with you that if you know a lot of skills, you can find a job easily, but can not get high salary.
And yes, donn't forget to enjoy your life..
