Post Counting : Feedback wanted
I am looking for feedback and your opinions. In this thread, I ask:
Posts counts are used to change your title.
What forums should count posts and which should not?
Brad!

# 1 Re: Post Counting : Feedback wanted
Forums which should count:
- Visual C++ Programming
- C++ (Non Visual C++ Issues)
- C++ and WinAPI
- Visual C++ .NET
- Visual C++ Bugs & Fixes
- ADO.NET
- Visual Basic Programming
- Visual Basic .NET
- C-Sharp Programming
- ASP.NET
- .NET Installation and Configuration Issues
- .NET Framework
- Java Programming
- Client Side Scripting
- XML
- Wireless/Mobile Development
- Developer Forum
- General Discussion - Technical
- Directory Services
- General Windows and DNA Programming
- Windows OS Issues
Forums which should not count:
- Developer News
- Announcements and press releases
- General Discussion / Chit Chat
- dev-archive News
- Feedback
- Testing Area
- Articles Suggestions
- Programming Projects
- Help Wanted
- Looking for Work
Hmmm...I could have said this much simpler I guess...basically every forum where knowledge is exchanged should count. And with knowledge I mean in regard to the purpose of the whole dev-archive website - development of software...
This might lead to the fact that members can be judged a little bit better by their number of posts although of course many posts in the development forums are also not programming-related...but I guess that would be the best you can reach with the association of member status and counting forums...
Only my 2 cents though... :cool:

Agreement with Andreas.
One different (but conceptually related) is the lifetime of post counts and/or average post counts per day.
There are a number of members who once contributed greatly, their efforts should be remembered and honored, but the ods of getting help from them today is greatly diminished.
There are those also who (although they have been long term members) have been contributing heavily for only a few months) [which when divided into their long membership gives a low post per day count].
If you are going to be editing the site it might be nice to add a "recent contribution" rating to each member. This would be the number of posts over a recent period of time (Only in the "counted" Forums.
Just a thought...

Well...I tend to agree but on the other side I have to admit that I would rather prefer to see this count disappearing. This is most-likely due to the fact that I - excuse me - do not see any advantage or anything else at all by having this number...
As discussed earlier...to my mind there is no perfect way of providing a member status. Some boards do it with rating, some with accepted answers and points given for that, some are based on the number of posts etc. None of the systems provide a perfect way to my mind. There are advantages and disadvantages of every system. But the number of post per day is being the worst way to determine it...
Of course this is only my personal opinion. To my mind most people will know that one person cannot be so bad by seeing his name popping up here pretty often... :cool:

I did not this to mean a "quality" type of rating, more of an indication of current involvement.
I agree that any type of counting arrangment rewards quantity rather than quality.
The "most accurate" method that I can think of, is also the highest overhead and most subjective. I believe that the cost/effort would also make it impractical. This method would be to have some group or panel review the content and apply a rating system.
For an open forum, like this I do not think this is a good idea, but I have seen it work sucessfully on a number of subscription/fee for service boards...
# 5 Re: Post Counting : Feedback wanted
I think counting only the posts in the forums named by Andreas is a good solution for the moment. In the long term, a rating system based on users rewarding each other (as the old site had) would be better. Until then, I think we shouldn't refine the current system too much, as it is inherently a bad one.
# 6 Re: Post Counting : Feedback wanted
I also agree with the forum repartion given by Andreas. It seems the fairest as long as member status is just based on post count.
The best solution could be a mix between the post count, post frequency and a rating system (like in old forum).

Thanks for the feedback so far. I look forward to any additional feedback.
I've said this before (and like all of you I'm also still waiting...), when the next full release of vBulletin comes out, our options for doing ratings and statuses increases. It includes better options -- including ratings closer to what were in the old system.
Brad!
# 8 Re: Post Counting : Feedback wanted
Brad, do you have any idea when the next version vBulletin will come out?

# 9 Re: Post Counting : Feedback wanted
I agree that a total count of posts is a minor issue. I think I would still feel that way even if I did not have the most.
I would like to suggets however that it might be appopriate to include the following forums in the list of those that "count":
Feedback
Articles Suggestions
Programming Projects
I am not familar with the Programming Projects forum well enough to be sure but I think the other two at least are forums where useful contributions are made. If others disagree then that is okay; I just wanted to express my opinion.
I am still concerned about ratings. In the past when ratings were used and emphasized there were many more answers to questions that could have been and should have been answered by the person asking for help.
# 10 Re: Post Counting : Feedback wanted
Well, all I wanna say(I'm too tired!:cool:) is that any forum is useful, even the General Discussion forum.(my favorite one)
This is the same as the saying that goes, "Every trade has it's ace".
Now Brad. Let's get serious. I don't really care what you kinda chicken chop you eat for lunch or dinner, but really....since I contribute quite heavily to the General Discussion forum, you gotta reward me and others by lifting the ban on the General Discussion forum, especially now that the rating system is gone.
Besides, not every thread in the General Discussion forum is about nonsense. There's some with precious advice and such.
And for guys like me and even Elrond(who seldom participate in the Visual C++ programming forum but more in the GD forum), we actually belong to the GD forum.
Guys like Sam Hobbs, Andreas and Gabriel help out often in the Visual C++ Programming forum. So, that means they belong more to these forums and less in the GD forum. In that case, their posts are incremented quite often too.
But for guys like Simon666, Solar, me, (and even Elrond & occasionally CBasicNet), we participate quite heavily in the GD forum, and thus, we actually contribute to the forum too.
In turn, the GD forum is almost ours, in a sense. So, in that case, we have a right to see our posts incremented too!(since we don't contribute too much to the Visual C++ programming forum)
Anyway, it's high time you make me the SuperModerator of the General Discussion forum, Brad pal.
I like this forum the most outta the others, so I will try my best to do it.(besides, I don't think there's too much or anything serious to do in these forums too....just need to view threads/posts and see if there's a fight etc.) :):cool::)

Brad...I am not sure whether you noticed it...but you might want to take a look at this thread (http://www.dev-archive.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=225994) as well regarding the above...

Aye~, Sam! U wouldn't undertstand! I mean, even if I post nonsense, I did contribute to this forum, and in the name of humanity, kindness, sales, loyalty, human rights and common senses, this is no way to repay a faithful member!:o :o :o :rolleyes:
Now, do u you beat the dog that save you life, anyone?:cool: :cool: (I'm no dog, but this is just an analogy, thank you. :D)

B-b-but....the General Discussion / Chit Chat forums is all about these, right?! :o
Now Sam! U're really disappointing! Aye~! :o
To think you would speak in this manner! Argh!
Now, Merlin has said before,
When a man has reached the crowning of his glory, his job is done and God shatters him.
Maybe this applies to me now, when the members are trying to start a revolt??!!! :eek::eek::eek:
