This heavenly book isn't out in local bookstores yet, and I've no credit cards to get it through Amazon.com.

But I wanna ask those who've seen/bought it : DOES MY NAME APPEAR in the Credits/Acknowledgements section of the book??!!

Now, Brad....I bet my manhood that u can gimme an answer! :D:D:D:D

Xeon,

I'm trying to remember the technical posts that you've made that would be of intrest to VC++ developers.....

I also don't recall you ever submitting an article for the primary dev-archive site. As such, I believe it is pretty safe to assume that you name is not in the book.

I did find Irona20 on page 302 though.

Why?! To boost my ego! :D

From Brad:

Yes, and I did help by replying to at least 20 posts to beginners over the years!:cool:

I did find Irona20 on page 302 though.

IRONA?!!!! This is crazy! Even she gets listed! DARN! Now, her ego is gonna be higher than mine when she knows this! Drats!

Now, u folks ain't being real gentlemen. I've been here and have been sucha' loyal member! Even after the post counting in the General Discussion forum has been stopped, I'm still here, unlike several others!

NigelQ says I'm in the book, so maybe he made a mistake or he's just kidding. :D:D:D

Hi Xeon,

I think I suggested looking for your name along with other gurus in the book. I know your name appeared in one of the drafts, but I wasn't sure if that snippet made it into the final version.

After checking, I'm sorry to say it did not, although there is mention of all of the combined efforts of everyone that contributes here, so as the self appointed house-warmer, that should certainly include you too.

Regarding the book, I have a copy of it now, and it really looks great. Everyone that visits and supports this great site should take some credit for it's production.

Distribution of the book should be making its way to all good book stores around the world any day now. You could ask your local store to specifically order it to make sure you get your copy (ask for ISBN 0789727773).

Regards,

- Nigel

Is there actually a table of contents available online for the book ? I'm really not quite sure what kind of stuff is in there and whether it would be useful to have it.

Argh! U heartless folks! Despite my utmost loyalty which can calm He|| and my total faithfulness which can make even the Heavens touched, this is the way u repay me??!! Darn!

But never mind. :D:D

Seriously, though...I visited Amazon.com just now and saw this book. No one has written a review yet, so should I?

I mean, if Brad or anyone here gives the signal, I'll instantly write a perfect customer review for the book using the most descriptive and marketing language and such to boost the book.

I'm sitting on the bed now awaiting the signal.(either a reply to this post, an e-mail, a bomb going off or a fire-works signal)

In the past, about 1.5 - 2 years ago, I bought this Systems programming book by Johnson M. Hart and wrote a review for it at :
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0201703106/ref=cm_cr_dp_2_1/002-4992963-7899253?v=glance&s=books&vi=customer-reviews

1) Scroll to the last review you find and click 'See all customer reviews'.
2) Then, when the new page appears, scroll to the middle of the page. My review is the 8th review. :):D

Need I say more??!!(tm):D

Yves,

I haven't seen an online index for the book yet, but I can assure you it covers pretty much all topics reasonably well. There are over 600 pages, with much of the code being on the CD.

Others have already told me that the layout of the book and the content are good, and I must admit being very pleased with the outcome myself. It makes for an excellent reference book.

There is a sample chapter (one of the 42) on-line at the Que Publishing site at
this page (http://www.quepublishing.com/catalog/sample_chapter.asp?product_id={D6F830BF-8489-4CC0-8563-EE607B8062CF}&session_id={2747C133-274C-4496-A4BA-353F9F52432F})

Xeon,

I have no objection to your review of the book, although I'd prefer to have an honest review than a slightly biased one. ;) Others have seen the book and already given me great compliments, so I really think the book can handle an open review.

I know I'll certainly keep a copy handy and use it regularly.

Thanks,

- Nigel

Cool, Nigel! :):D

Ok, but if sales suddendly dip, tell me and we can discuss about forming an army of 20 posters to post Excellent-rated reviews there every day.:D

Xeon, don't feel so bad. My name isn't in the book either, but yours is a lot more often on the site than mine. :)
So you are more famous than I am, isn't it enough to cheer you up? There is a least someone below. ;o)

I'll look this book up in stores... I hope it is exported over here.

Only post a review if you've read or seen the book. If you haven't seen or read the book, then you should say this in your review. While I believe most of the reviews on Amazon (and other sites) to be bogus, I'd prefer to solicite only real, honest reviews. Of course, if you have a bad review, then I'd rather you just tell us here rather than tell the world on Amazon :).

I'll get the Table of Contents for the book to post here or on the main dev-archive site. I can get this from the publisher. As to the content -- it is all here on dev-archive already. The nice thing about the book is that it organizes it and presents it nicely.

As stated on the main site (http://www.dev-archive.com) , I have a few copies that I'm giving away (randomly) to people who have articles posted on the main site. Five people have already won copies. I'll be giving a couple of copies away in February and March as well. I'm going to start a thread on the forums from which I'll give away a free copy as well -- look for the thread!

Brad!

Xeon - I was only picking on you -- knowing you can handle it :). There were only so many pages in the book. Most of the names that made it into the book were from articles that are posted on the main site.

Girls will always be girls! That's the point! How sweet and touching, soft and cuddly, motivating and calming! Marina the Goddess!!!
Yes, yes. I'll listen to you and be good for once. :D:)

So you are more famous than I am, isn't it enough to cheer you up? There is a least someone below.

Yes, and that's mainly cos' girls have a lower ego than boys.
In an interview with the host of this TV show called Survivor : Amazon, the girls tend to do better cos' they're calmer and they're not too rushed about trying to show off etc. :D
Argh!

I'll look this book up in stores... I hope it is exported over here.

Aye, Marina! If you can afford it, buy an air-ticket to the US to get this book to show your loyalty!

From Brad:

Nah, Brad! I wouldn't do that!
After all, ain't I suppose to be the #1 Most Loyal Member here?! :)

Yes, that's the main thing. The site tends to be messy for some reason, and there's some kinda grammar and spelling mistakes here and there. But with editing from Nigel, everything should be much better.
But bugs! As you know, almost all the code in the dev-archive articles have bugs! In that case, are they being fixed and tested etc.? :)

As stated on the main site , I have a few copies that I'm giving away (randomly) to people who have articles posted on the main site.

Argh Brad! Christmas is still 10 months away!
Really, if you give away too much books, it's gonna degrade the value of this book!:)

Xeon - I was only picking on you -- knowing you can handle it . There were only so many pages in the book. Most of the names that made it into the book were from articles that are posted on the main site.

Yes, I understand, actually. After all, this is a dev-archive articles book and I didn't contribute to any article! :D
But if there's a forums book in future, then I really must be included!:)

And speaking of forums, maybe u folks can start a dev-archive FAQ book in future, as a companion to this article-based book?

Scot Wingo already has a MFC FAQ book somewhere, but this dev-archive book on the most commonly asked questions in the forums as well as not in the forums would be nice. :D

You answer a "From the Forum" question:

Answer [irona20]:
The following code will indicate the current state of the toolbar:
xxxxxx (code)

I didn't include the code.

Brad, I ordered the book a few days ago. With the mercy of the United States Postal Office and that of the postmans here in Switzerland (who is probably riding a goat -- I can't find other explanation why the book needs 21 days to reach me :)) I will get it soon. Then I will read it, and if you want me to, I'll write a (serious) review.

Fair child...understand that because each plane in the US needs to go through 50 levels of terrorist checking, it's not gonna be fast. Maybe you gotta try Amazon.com?

And postmen riding goats! How cute and funny! :D:D:D:D:D
