Size of User Profile -- too large!

Why the system uses/shows that the specific user is having profile size in MBs?
I know when we store data in My Documents, it counts. But the OS should be smart enough to detect that and reduce that usage amount from user's profile.

Furthermore, if an administrator deletes the user profile it also deletes all documents in My Documents folder of that user.

Is it not an issue that MS should look in next release of NT systems?

And the worst.... It increases Login time...

Are you talking about logging onto a Windows NT domain? Because in Windows 2000 you can set up a group policy which allows you to exclude certain profile directories, such as My Documents from the sync'ing process at log on/off.

You can then change the location of the My Documents folder in windows 2000 to use different directory on the LAN.

Nope! Specific to single user only.

I see what you mean now. Do you use user quotas? The issue of reducing the profile size automatically could cuase problems. Especially with the My Documents directory. You can set the quotas up to warn the use when they are reaching their limit though, again you can modify the local group policy so as the temporay directories are cleared on log off.

It is still however a good idea to locate the "My documents" directories on a another parition or on a network. You can then delete the user profile without worrying about the documents going too. It also provides a fail safe when and if you have to do a reinstall, ytou needn't worry about backing up all the separate document directories, just take an image of the partition.

No I am not using Disk Quatas - but I know what they are for.
Do one thing: Copy (or move) huge amount of data in your "My Documents" and see the logging time. Also see the Profile size in System properties.

Log on times on my machine vary. But I logon to a domain, I have to be carfeul what I put in my profile folder though becuase really large files will be copied over to the PDC when I log off and then back again when I log on.

I don't see why the size of the My Documents directory should affect logon time ?? I'll have a play around with it later though. ;)
