Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
OK, so i just read the "last one to post..." thread and saw Tom's job testing vehicle durabilty, etc. I reckon that sounds pretty interesting (at least for a little while), so I thought I'd plonk down this thread.
The goal - If you have, or have had, a cool job that you think is pretty special, different, weird, etc, post it! It can be IT related, or non-IT related, I don't care.
Here's my contribution - While at uni, I was a fire spotter. This meant that I sat at the top of a big tall tower, at the top of the tallest mountain in the area, and looked for fires all summer. I had to look for smoke, radio through when thunderstorms were building, log lightning strikes, etc. Basically, this meant that most of the time I sat in a chair reading books and glancing around every once in a while! Becaue it was in the middle of nowhere (about 60k's from the nearest town of 200 ppl, 150k's to the nearest town of a reasonable size - i.e. with more than 1 pub ;)) I would generally camp up there at nights as well. It was pretty awesome. Sitting in a tower while winds of 100 knots were buffeting the tower is a pretty cool experience! so's watching the radio in front of you explode after the tower get's hit by lightning.
So, all my mates thought it was the coolest thing around when I told them about it, but surely someone out there has something better!

Well, my job in Germany wasn't bad. I just wish I had the chance to do more programming... and sitting :) .

Question is though - what was the mystery job in Germany?? (too lazy to see if you posted it already somewhere :) )

I was a barman before I went to tech to study computer programming. It was in a 1st class seafood restaurant right on sydney harbour (see link (http://www.waterfrontrestaurant.com.au/) )
That was good for a while but I got sick of washing glasses every night and wanted an office job.
Now I got an even cooler job as a developer for sensitive security & anti-terrorism products. I'd tell you more but our clients might be monitoring this. All I can say is I work on a classified product calle

So if we don't hear from you for a couple of days, is there someone we should call?

# 9 Re: Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
Heh... lederhosen.
Nah, I had to videotape and then edit videos of managers giving "trainings". It got boring fast. Then I had to do alot of running around to different filming areas, that wasn't too fun, atleast the food was free :) . I screwed around with JSP, but that wasn't a thrill.
The upside was the pay (700 euros, woohoo! I brought back with me around $2500 :D ) and the fact that I worked predominantly in an office.
# 10 Re: Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
so that's two people who dreamed of working in offices. You know, I did the same, but now I look out at the guys leaning on their crowbars on the construction site below me and think how much easier they have it. I swear it was easier working 14 hour days as a gold prospector, lugging around soil samples all day, auguring holes in solid rock and watching my workmate get bitten by snakes (yeah - that was also a cool job) then it is sitting in a chair for 9 hours a day trying to figure out such rubbish as why someone who ordered 2 washers got charged 9 cents instead of 8 cents (yes, it happened at my last job, took 2 hours to find, and the answer - GST rounding, and perfectly ligit).

# 12 Re: Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
I do asphalt work in the summer thats fun:D
# 13 Re: Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
Before jumping into programming, I was a counter salesman. The coolest thing about it? No endless deadlines, just sit tight, read anyting of your interests, do the job and go home at time.

# 14 Re: Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
Ehee... I was a young electronic designer (that was really cool);
... because I finished all can be done there, I began something more trivial: programming;
...soon, because... :)
# 15 Re: Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
Well Whether your job Is cool Or Bad it depends on For WHOM your doing the JOB and What TYPE of job you are doing., Because Satisfaction This term is very subjective.
I think People see the things in a way they are and They ASK WHY? And I See the things In a Way They Should be. And I ASK WHY NOT?
So It doesnt matter what Job you are doing .. The only thing is Matter whether you are doing it Honesty and Gracefully.
Happy Working anyway............. :)

I paid my way through college working as a mill and lathe operator in a small factory that made gearing and machine transmissions.
# 18 Re: Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
Coolest job ? Being a student at university. Only 10 hours lectures every week, loads of beer and women, food and accomodation payed for by the state. That was a long time ago though...
Doing a doctorate in Virtual Reality was pretty cool too. Got a free trip to Hawaii out of it...

loads of beer and women
Darwen.
Back when I went to the Michigan Technological University in the early 80's there just weren't many women in technical school. In mechanical engineering there were 15 men for every woman. Drag. There was lots of beer there though. :thumbd:
# 20 Re: Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
Speaking of college bludge time, I did 2 years at college when I was 18, studying tourism & hotel management. After the first month, the only time I went to class was to see if there were any new cute chicks I could ask out :D
Ok, dirty laundry time, spill'em... I know not everyone was a good boy here :p

Uni... uni.. let's see now. I used to go to two lectures for each subject.
- The first of the semester, so I could get the reading materials, etc
- The last of the semester, so I could get the exam notes.
(this of course excludes compulsory attendence)
They posted the lecture notes before the lecture, so you could get on the net and see if there was anything you didn't understand anyway.
See, unlike the lucky deniz, we didn't have any new cute chicks showing up - in fact, there were only 2 chicks in my whole year level doing computer science, so it was far more "educational" to hang around the student union lounge and frequent the bars in the area!
I used to love going to the occasional tute and getting told by the tutor that "there's a class in here, you'll have to leave now". hehe.

Females are far and between when it comes to being a CS major. I know only 2 cute girls in CS, everything else either has a mustache, is wide as tall or simply oogly. However there are 2 nice ones in mechanical engineering, one of them is incredible (dang, should have switched my majors when I had the chance :) .)
# 23 Re: Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
My first job out of college was in hardware design for a CCTV (closed circuit television) company. That was cool. If you ever see any specials on the History channel (or the like) about casino security, that's prolly our equipment.
Worked on things like video motion detectors; pan-tilt units; multiple camera's per screen feeding a 24 hour VTR... Mmmm, fun stuff. Unfortuately, since we needed places to test the equipment we were designing, you couldn't get away with too much. OTOH, if you were looking for someone, it was pretty easy to find them in the building!

# 25 Re: Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
Coolest job: Shark wrangler
I worked on a seiner in Alaska in the summer of '91 and we somehow got this shark in our net and had to dump it in the fish hold with the rest of our catch. He was thrashing about and making a mess so one of us had to go down there and hook a rope up to it so we could use the boom hoist and pull it out. Just imagine wading alone in 4ft of water with an 8ft. shark and about 3000 salmon, its dark and you really can't see the shark to well because of all the other fish and you have to tie a rope to it somehow. It was, suffice it to say, a short lived career.
Looking for a pic, I just found this interesting link (http://www.conservationinstitute.org/salmonsharks.htm) which pretty much says it all. The shark in that pic looks the same. Those pics are from a seiner boat too. My boat was out of Cordova as well. I'm guessing there must be other wranglers out there.

# 28 Re: Who has (or has had) the coolest job?
i worked as a bellboy in a hotel before, that was great, just bring people to their rooms and show them how to open the door, and i got tips for that!!!
i also worked in a comic book store, sitting there all day reading comics, ahhh that was fun...
but my coolest job would be when i was working in Makro Cash&Carry, as a store assistant, they have a high rack to keep good, need to use those forklift to put the good up in the rack, that was cool because whn u get used to drive that thing, people just stand there and watch you put things up... hehehe
now, i just sit in front of my pc, and type something, c++ they say, nothing cool about that..
/ i used to climb up the highest rack, make a shield with the boxs and eat the food, drink the coke and smoke... then i sleep up there untill my shift is over... :D
