Very well, micor$soft have monopoly in this field too. I think there is no third party
DDK which isn't from micorsoft? why people don't kick their asses and demand anti-trust measures?

There is no free!

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/ddk/orderddkcd.mspx

If you are planning on using it for Windows 2000 then you want Windows Server 2003 DDK edition.

huh
The DDK is the Driver Development Kit for Windows... how can a third party create a development kit for writing drivers on windows? Only Microsoft can do that. It has nothing to do with monopoly. And if you don't like that, there are plenty of other options: MacOS, Linux, Unix, ...

I was taught that if you sell something you may not be the only one on the block.
second, unfortunately Windows is not my choice. All commercial firms in Russia
working with Microsoft, so there is no such thing as option. Windows is on 95% of
desktops. I call it monopoly. It sting me badly. So in such event I'm pressed to
use pirate copy. You can have third party ddk if court will say so. There is no
such thing as impossible in programming world.

You obviously don't get it...
The DDK explains in details HOW to write drivers for the Windows platform. How would a third party be able to explain in details HOW to write drivers? Microsoft has made the OS, so only they can explain it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but are there header files in DDk which you have
to include in order to build drivers? If so evidently this is not only explanations.

I have to agree with sulacco. Just because Columbus "discovered" America doesn't mean that I don't know where it is or had a part to do with it. Microsoft is very open with its coding. Think about it, Marc G. You are programmer so you know that Microsoft products can be manipulated. There would be a possibility of a third-party software but that doesn't mean that there is. Microsoft may own the software but they are not the only ones who can write it.

There is old story with Bell Co. which once upon a time was a huge monopoly.
It owned lines , phone stations. In that time if you wanted to buy yourself a phone
you have to buy a licence from Bell corp. Then the court ruled that Bell corporation
have to be divided. It's hardware lines were given to competitors. In the
end customers were the winners. This company was renamed AT&T but couple
months ago it died, nobody cried.

Yes. To unerline this take a look at the ReactOS (http://www.reactos.org) project.

BTW: Columbus has only found an island, and the wikings found America before Columbus. Well we know that from Microsoft as well (Xerox & GUI for example)

I am not ignorant when it comes to history. Maybe next time you should look at the quotations surrounding the word "Discovered."

Well of course. I just want to point out that Microsoft and Columbus are not that different ... :p

We are talking about device drivers. If I need to make a device driver for Windows, I would definitely use the MS DDK to make sure I use the correct information.

There is no domination here. Order the CD's you will pay shipping and handling. You can also get the newer DDK which includes the 2000 DDK.

I have the 2000 DDK on CD. I also have it archived from download when it was still available pre-Nov2002. It didn't put me out to order the CD's through Microsoft.

You know actually I respect people who did DDK and I learned a lot from Microsoft products. But now I think they just an obstacle. Microsoft started from
Dos which was written by Unix guru. IBM gave away pc to boost market but micro$oft is too greedy they unwilling to give away what they will lost anyway in time in disgrace. ms may end up like Bell co.

If you are so sick of so called "Domination" then either install Linux or buy a Mac. Problem solved.

I can't all commercial firms use Microsoft in Russia. I have to deal to earn a little money using MS. But I have Linux on second computer. Someday I will move.

BS.
When I need to write a driver for Windows, I need to info from MS especially if I'm going to write a commercial driver. It's the same for ALL platforms. If you need to write a driver for MacOs, you will turn to the Apple documentation.

And like Mick and I already said, you only pay shipping and handling which won't be much. And if you are working for a company, then I think that company should pay the shipping and handling. I'm sure they can otherwise it's not a healthy company.

Thanks, Marc and everyone for trouble writing here. Now I got it. Shipping and
handling cost which means you don't pay for DDK. I'm not working for any
company yet and still doing my homework. It's interesting why they(MS) have made DDK not available via Net. I think that writing drivers is a good method to
understand system.

# 26 Re: Where to get DDK for Windows 2000?
Don't really need the DDK. Just use SoftIce Driver Suite, Undocumented Windows NT, and WinDriver. Reading some stuff on Windows NT rootkit development helps too. Most rootkit sites include the winddk.h in their src. That's all you "really" need from the DDK. You can find the Strucs and equates elsewhere. All of the above can be found for free. P2P, andr.net, rootkit.com, etc.
