When a drive is mounted you have to change this with FDISK.EXE. On a bootdisk, run the application FDISK.EXE from the command prompt. Remove all partitions and then create a new partion. From there go and format your drive. Do NOT use quickformat!!!

hi
thanxxx for ur reply.but i don wanna format all of my drives i wanna format only c drive coz others contains my data so plz tell me how can i do so?
bye
I don't mean format all your drives. I am saying with FDISK, you can remove all partitions of the C: Drive. Then from there, with the command prompt and your boot disk, type "format c:" and be done with it. From there you can install the OS. Know that if you want to install Windows XP or 2000 you will not want to format your hard drive using this technique because you will then have a FAT32 partition and not NTFS. If you want Windows XP or 2000, just put the CD in the CD-ROM and install it with a repartition.

Alternatively, make sure you have another bootable media, like CD-ROM or diskette, which has the format executable. Boot up from it and then you can start formating.
