Windows msgsvr32.exe not responding

Hey,

I have a Windows 98 workstation that is behaving rather badly. The reason that it is a Windows 98 workstation is that it has an app that runs on it that uses a vxd. For now the computer and its workstation do their job.

Normally on a cold boot, I get an hourglass that frequently shows up, and Windows functions run in slow motion.

When I end the task msgsvr32.exe in the task manager, everything goes to being hunky dory. Once I fixed this problem with ms article KB169987 (Msgsrv32 not responding when Computer hangs while Idle). The problem is back roughly 50 days later and it is not going away, even though all my power saving is disabled.

I will not always be around to make this happen.

How can I fix this?

Believe it or not, what you are describing is actually an account virus activity. On Windows 98 "msgsvr32.exe" is the file that is very frequently attacked. Use a virus scan that has definitions up to date and clean out your system. Just for kicks, I would run some spyware/adware scans as well.

Hmmm thanks,

I will run a virus scan and spyware software and tell you what I find.

I actaully ran SFC and it found that user.exe was corrupt, and replaced it from the Setup Disks, so what you say may be true.

No, no viriloids or spywareloids. Just a good old fashioned winders mess. After I ran SFC, and replaced user.exe, the problems quite happening though.
