NAV and Gmail problems
My NAV and Norton Internet Security don't load anymore on startup.
I am not sure of what switches to use with the EXE names in case I want to add the registry entries for the start up myself in LOCAL_MAC\Soft\MS\CurrVer\Run Once etc. Can someone help me there?
I am unable to enable AutoProtect on NAV. The Enable button doesn't do anything. If I change the options and check, "Enable AutoProtect", it doesn't take affect.
I ran a full scan twice and discovered no spyware except Download Accelerator Plus (DAP), which I had installed myself. I am not sure if it is because of DAP that this is happening.
Another thing that's happening is that I am not able to open Gmail. When I type gmail.google.com in any browser on my system, it takes me to the default search engine and looks for Gmail in that search engine (which happens to be MSN just now for IE). Clicking the gmail link takes gives me the "The page cannot be displayed" error on IE. On firefox, typing gmail.google.com (or any other URL of Gmail) gives me a message box saying, "The connection was refused when attempting to contact www.google.com."
And I am able to read but not post to Google Groups on the affected system.

To know different ways of launching an application on startup, read this post (http://www.dev-archive.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1213687&postcount=4).
Note that as far as NAV goes, there should be an Antivirus Control Panel where you can set this option, and the software will place the Registry Entries / Shortcuts for you.
Good luck.

I am not sure of what switches to use with the EXE names As said in my previous post, there should be an Option with the AntiVirus Control Panel that will create entries with the right switches for you.
in case I want to add the registry entries for the start up myself in LOCAL_MAC\Soft\MS\CurrVer\Run Once etc.Note that in this location, the application is executed only on the first LOGON, and then, the key is deleted.
You need to place a key inside... "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"

Thanks for replying, Siddhartha. I am aware of the registry keys that one needs to put entries in for start up, all of them. I am also aware of the control panel in NAV.
When I do check the checkbox that says, "Enable AutoProtect" it doesn't work for me. And the caption reads, "Status: Urgent Attention"

Well... As far as Norton Anti-Virus goes, it is very likely that the real-time file scanner is a service and not a starup application. So, inserting registry keys manually is not the best thing to do...
It will help to contact Norton Customer Service, or to re-install the application. This is certainly an easier thing to do than to play with the Registry and AV Configuration... ;)
