Reservations in jobs/higher education
Hi,
The Indin government has increased reservation in institutes of higher learning by yet another 27%. This means that now half of the seats in these institutes like IITs IIMs etc wil be reserved for ethenic groups considered to be backward and weeker. Mind you, the consideration is not on economic basis, but purely on caste or racial basis.
Already goverment jobs are also reserved upto 50% and similar proposal is being sought for the private sector jobs as well.
I want to know whether similar reservation exists in other countries and if yes, then upto what extent.

In the United States it's called "Affirmative Action" , but it does not work on a quota system. It is a special consideration given to minorities and women in employement and education. If all other things are equal then the woman/minority candidate gets preference over others.
There are quota systems in some other parts of the world. What comes to mind quickly is Afghanistan (because it's been in the news recently). After the overthow of the Taliban, the Afghan constitution guarantees 25% of the delegates to Parliament to be women.

not sure if thats gonna be implemented ...the 50% reservation as it was based on a censes that was made in 1931 ( caste based censes ) , the matter is now taken up by the suprieme court. well they have given the govt 2 weeks time to prove their stand. :D otherwise its gonna be bad :(
