Windows Media Player

Hi, I need some help viewing avi files. I have the codecs (Morgan MJPG) properly installed, but the windows media player 9 plays a black image, and it gives no error. The same avi files can be viewed perfectly on another machine, with the same windows media player 9... ? Any clues ?? ???

Thanks & See ya,

As you stated, a black image. That means it is a codec. There won't always be an error displayed for not having the correct codec. The best option is to compare the installed codecs of Windows Media Player on a machine that can show the video. Also, upgrade your version of DirectX if not the latest version.

Thanks! you were right: the problem was on the codec. I solved it by simply changing the fourcc code of the codec from MJPG to DMB1 (or something like that).
- Can you tell me how did you figure out it was a codec problem?
- And, Why did I solved it by just changing that?

Thanks again and see ya,

1. With Windows Media Player, It is always a codec when the video plays with no error and all you see is black! There is only one exception to this. In Windows Media Player, if you are using dual monitor mirroring, it can only play the video to one screen.

2. Each codec is written for a specific reason of quality and compatibility. Somewhere, your machine fell short. I recommend not using DivX codecs. They require a DivX player which everyone does not have and most are full of spyware. The best to use is H264 compression and if not that, use MPEG4.

Another question,
Is there any codec that is installed by default with windows XP ?

I am actually using Morgan's MJPG, but the user would have to purchase it or something... and I am looking for a "default" alternative. It would have to work more or less well.

Windows Media Player comes with standard video compression. I don't believe that it comes with any codecs. When enabled, it will download any codec it can find that it needs. This is a default setting.

I am primarily a Mac user so I work with Quicktime and VLC Player. VLC Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) is also available for Windows. You should look into it. It does wonders.
