# 1 Re: Raining heavily in mumbai for 5th consecutive day
Ah, great that you start this thread... I've been wondering as to why reaching people back in Bombay on the telephone is of late such a difficult thing - the heavy rains must be to blame.
Probably, the phone lines are disrupted in many areas...

Today I heard that it is not as bad as media is potraying it. There have been troubles for mumbaikars but not as bad as it was last year.
Is that true??

Media shows the worst cases usually, but sure it is a bad situation, it's water everywhere and transport systems do not work.
The scariest thing is, this will happen everytime when there is 2 days of ranining.

I guess our Tax Money is going into someobodies pockets rather being utilized to solve these issues.
It is somewhat same in Hyderabad, a quick shower for an hour or so and roads are filled with water and traffic jams, etc. We should start doing something about this.

It's already began, people are now taking a lot of action against this, media helps to kick responsible dept's butt.

Yeah, there is trouble. But what happened last year was a something no one had ever expected.
The administration is alert this time. But the thing is that in cities like mumbai we need a complete overhaul of urban policy(more specifically drainage & road system) & we can't have a shangai if things turn out like this on every occasion we have heavy showers...
PS:A lot still needs to be done on the part of administration not withstanding their tall claims
# 8 Re: Raining heavily in mumbai for 5th consecutive day
Don't mind me guys but this just the beginning...man will have to pay the price for his ill doing to mother earth :p
Things are going to get worse for sure in future and we will all be here hopefully to tell the tale :D
Man better find another planet soon!
# 9 Re: Raining heavily in mumbai for 5th consecutive day
I agree with MB. It is becoming hotter in summers, colder in winters and it rains like hell in moonsoon.
Which planet should we go to? :(

Krypton :D
I am not a Superman :(
Anyways I guess we should pray for the people in Mumbai and also work towards making our Cities more secure rather than waiting for the government to come and help us.
# 12 Re: Raining heavily in mumbai for 5th consecutive day
Yes if only this feeling could rise in each and everyone of of us

How ?
On individual level, one can only try to motivate and take care of his duties, right ?

Yes. Thats what we don't do, we don't take care of our duties. I have seen piles of garbage being thrown in the drainage system in almost all the cities, can't we, as responsible citizens, stop this from happening. You know 90% of water clogging happens because of blocked drainage systems.

Beside educating people to be more responsible. I believe that street cleaners are still needed. Even if everyone never throw rubbish into the drain. The drain will still clog by itself, e.g. soil deposit, dead leaves, etc.

# 17 Re: Raining heavily in mumbai for 5th consecutive day
You want a street cleaner to check every day to see if someone tossed trash in a drain? Why not just stop people from tossing trash?
A drain might take a decade to get clogged by leaves, but can get polluted in no time, if done repeatedly. There are too many streets out there to police every drain.
# 18 Re: Raining heavily in mumbai for 5th consecutive day
I think you misunderstood me. Being responsible is definitely the most important. I have to admit that in Singapore, there are still some irresponsible people who throw rubbish anywhere they like. But as a whole, it is pretty well under control. Probably, you have already known, we have rows of trees being planted along every road and street. It becomes one of main problem that clog up the drain especially during certain season. Anyway, whether it is man-made or nature, we still need people to help up clearing the rubbish if we care to improve the situation.

With todays leaders concentrating on their on welfare, I guess we as citizens have more responsibility towards our societies.. Unless we educate people and become act responsibly we will have to face hardships.
Let us start from our own small communities and probably it can become a revolution. What say?

Just some crazy thought. I am seeing that it is a win-win situation for everyone. With enough volunteers (like helping in the cleaning) to form critical mass, it will be easy to convey the message to educate others. When the streets are well maintained, it not only prevent property/life losses during rainy season but also attract more people migrating to or visiting the town/city. Hence, it should boost the town/city economically which benefit everyone including the government.

And then this migration causes the city to crumble due to lack of resources..Kheun visit mumbai and u will know ..

Anyway, whether it is man-made or nature, we still need people to help up clearing the rubbish if we care to improve the situation.I've been to Singapore, and the cleanliness of the city was impressive indeed.
One can't help but appreciate that for a tropical country, Singapore has to a great extent engineered a wonderful balance between flora and cleanliness.Just some crazy thought. The problem in places like India is IMO - to a great extent - ignorance, illiteracy and indifference.
In a country where about 60% of the population is illiterate and an approximate equal amount is under the poverty line, it gets difficult to explain the benefits of cleanliness to the masses (who are more occupied in earning the day's dinner) - in spite of the fact that these poor people living on the streets stand to actually benefit the most from it.
Otherwise, indifference is a big issue too. I have seen educated people - even from affluent backgrounds who live in palatial homes throw waste paper on the streets, or even spit in public.
The cleaners in cities like Bombay are paid a handsome salary by the city corporation - to say the least. But, they are often terribly ill-motivated, corrupt and don't have pride in what they do. The caste system is often a reason for the poor motivation, or the low self-pride. So, the cleaners themselves do a great job at doing a bad job.
What does a city of such people deserve - if not clogged drains?
I am a Bombayite myself - but, am very critical of some dominantly Indian habits.
# 25 Re: Raining heavily in mumbai for 5th consecutive day
Thank you very much for you compliments. Even so, there are some occasional "careless" people breaking it. This is why there is always some sort of on-going reminder through various different means (like mass media, voluntary group and even public punishment, like street cleaning for violators) to remind people about it. You know, it is very much like maintaining a house. If we are indifferent that a window is broken and not going to repair it. Soon, the entire house start crumbling down because we also learn to ignore other faults. Thus, it is very important to be vigilant.
I am really sad that half of India population is suffering poverty and people are ignorance of a possible better future which everyone deserve. Even though bad habit die hard, I really hope that education or other means can help them realized that they can really achieve it if they are willing to begin the journey.
Clogged drain in this situation is really a big issue. It not only causes inconvenience but also spreads of diseases, causes loss of properties and lifes. People's life need to be stabilized first before any improvement can be made. Thus I think that it may be one of the top priority issue to be tackled.

Clogged drain in this situation is really a big issue. It not only causes inconvenience but also spreads of diseases, causes loss of properties and lifes. This is absolutely true.
There is a city in India called Surat. Till a few years back, Surat quite like Bombay was in many areas a pig-sty - to say the least. The inevitable that had to happen, happened.
In 1994 Surat was hit by Plague (http://cgi.cnn.com/ASIANOW/asiaweek/features/asiacities/ac1999/data/improved.surat.html).
People suffered, people died.
Also, people realized their folly. A few years later, Surat was voted the second cleanest city (http://edugreen.teri.res.in/explore/solwaste/surat.htm) in India - after Chandigarh.
So, perhaps it takes adversity to make people realize the importance of seemingly small issues like cleanliness. I hope Bombayites wake up before it gets that late.
Of course, it is a lot tougher to transform a bustling metropolis like Bombay with close to 17 Million inhabitants than it is to transform places like Surat. Llike I pointed out, many problems bear roots in cultural nuances, and it will need a mindset transformation in addition to education and prosperity to help the civilization.

While it is true that cooperation of people is a must..In the present scenario, however, i believe tougher decisions on the part of govt. is lacking..
A change brought from above( read from authorities wielding power) is less painful and faster.
They can impose hard & fast rules. The big thing is they have the govt. machinery & resources.
After all, people think twice before throwing garbage or spitting in a neat & clean place while one will hardly think before spitting & throwing garbage in a dirty, stinking place.
Having said this, responsible citizens have to be the flag-bearers of the movement.
