Career in Programming?

I have been interested in programming for some time. I am a college grad with a bach. degree in computer networking (Windows and Cisco).

I have started to go through a primer on C++. Only programming I have done is very basic stuff in Visual Basic.

My question is... is having a career in programming still an option in today's world. The guy I work with says it is not since most of the programming is done over seas now.

Im just looking to better myself and my income. I have an interest in programming and I was wondering what others thought of the field as a whole. I would like to get into some form of game programming since video games is also a hobby of mine. Im 26 Years old, if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the advice.

Depending on circumstances, in today's world and not only, sometimes selling bananas can be more prfitable than programming. ;)

I think 26 years old makes no difference, if you have only a basic VB knowledge, deep it and go on, maybe you can get a job on this field.
About game development, there are many fields, you can study for graphics, audio, tools development, networking, scripting (I see this appropriate for your actual state) and so on.
The answer is always: yes, but you must start to study as soon as possible and never stop.

Depends upon what part of the world you work. :)

In india programming is one of the high profile job.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Yes, i am really considering shifting my career a bit. Right now im a computer / network technician so I am no stranger to computers. However the knowledge required to repair these things is becoming everyday knowledge.

I started going through my C++ primer last night. Since I dont have visual studio (yet), Im using a program called code::blocks which was suggested to me until I get into more complex programming.

As far as which field of programming, im not quite sure. I dont know much about audio. Im good with photoshop and premier but I haven't worked much with real 3D programs like 3DS Max or anything. I am good at making things look good but I dont have the creativity to actually dream up the idea...understand?

Anyway, Ill spend some time on these forums and hopefully learn a lot in combination with my book and my laptop ^^.

You can download FREE versions of Visual Studio 2005 Express, which also includes versions of a few different compilers. I'm pretty sure that C++ is there, but it may be C#.

Code::Blocks is good to start.

Why have you mentioned Photoshop and 3DS? They're not related to programming fields (ok - exception for plugins development), if you want to learn programming it doesn't make sense that you have no creativity with 3DS. Audio, video, graphics etc... you have to see what you like and what are your skills.

Anyway, Ill spend some time on these forums and hopefully learn a lot in combination with my book and my laptop ^^.

Good idea :D
