Newbie
Hi Everyone,
I thought i would make an introductory post. I'm here for A LOT of help :)
I'm currently doing my PhD in Mechanical Engineering and i need to write software that basically takes the data from a data aquisition system and displays it graphically and processes it in real time to give feedback.
Somehow i don't think this is going to be easy given the fact the only language i know is HTML worked with CSS and also Unix command line. The company that made the hardware has given us permission to take their software and modify it which may make my job a little easier??
Anyway the point i am at now is that i have been told this program was written in Borland C.....means little to me but i got hold of Borland Developer Studio 2006....so i have that a an O'Reilly C book.
I'll probably be on here daily asking questions.....please speak to me in simple terms and don't get annoyed :)
Thanks
Dave

You are in the best position possible to learn programming; you have well defined task. This is the best help forum I have found. You need to be aware that on the surface programming seems like no big deal, but it is incrediably difficult. It will suck more hours out of your life than most people are willing to give. I came here four years ago with no programming experience at all. Now the software I wrote with the help of guys at code guru is generating several million dolars of revenue a year. Just keep an open mind and always remeber that you don't know what you are doing.

That is totaly cool, especially considering that you missed the bubble. What do you sell, any tips for a young super ambitious programmer wanting to start a company.

Please don't. Microsoft and Google will sooner or later dominate the field that your company is in. If you're selling calendar software, MS and Google has already blocked your path with Microsoft Outlook and Google Calendar respectively. If you're selling office applications, so does MS and Google. The future is bleak.
It's quite a lot better to work under a good company that provides plenty of welfare for employees, such as power-nap times, hot/cute girls in tight clothes, big huge fat-*** yearly bonuses etc. Then, when you've the experience and can feel the heartbeat of the software industry and when you're one with Technology itself(meaning that you're Technology and Technology is you), then you can start out.
Take it from someone who's been through all that.

Btw, C discussions are taken care of in the non-visual C++ forum itself (see forum description). It is better if OP mentions that the threads deals with C because most people by default there percieve it to be C++.

Nah! You won't get addicted. I'll show you the way. However, my hard disk has less than 200 MB of "you-know-what" files. But then, I always feel that quality matters more than quantity. I hate those 40-seconds short clips! :thumbd:

Nah, it doesn't. It makes you more like a ladies man and will enhance your sweet-talking skills because it makes you more horny and higher in your sex drive. Good for you. :thumb:
See you!
