If microsoft made cars

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated , "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments , General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part, esp 7th point):

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed an Illegal Operation" warning light.

7. The airbag system would ask, "Are you sure?" before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

JPnyc, I find your disrespect for Microsoft most disturbing.

I'm one of their biggest supporters and most ardent defenders. But that doesn't mean I can't laugh at em now and again, either.

11. There would be linux cars which you could get for free, drive on all roads, except it won't alway's be compatible with the traffic lights and speed limit (which is sometimes a good thing)

12. Someone will make a virus (linux not effected)

Built-In Stobe Lights. Eliminate ALL Red Lights (except, FATAL, if a fire truck was coming from the other way!)

Why are you all thinking that if they made cars they would have the same issues that windows has/had? :D

Cars != Windows :D ;)

Cars != Windows That's right. :D

But most cars have windows (collection thereof :D )... So, it would be OK to assume that all problems associated with Windows should manifest themselves in a car designed by Microsoft... :D

OTOH, I think the reverse analogy needs an upgrade.
IMO, if GM made software, they would -
Try selling it with a 10 year "Powertrain Warranty" :D and incur huger losses maintaining software that's way too outdated for its times.
Be terribly processor inefficient (parallel to their fuel efficiency).
An average notepad application would cost a GB of HDD space (comparison to the size of the very average vehicles they sell.. )
Smaller vendors from Japan would take away their market share with cheaper software that did the same job a lot faster and consume a lot less space, and need little or no maintenance.
It would take GM decades to figure the reason why it's software doesn't sell out. :D
The erstwhile small-vendors would get as big as GM in these decades...
Now at a wits end, GM would try forming alliances with European software companies hoping they pay it's debts out notwithstanding the fact that it is in direct competition with them - this of course doesn't work.
...
Any GM lovers out here... ? :D
(Please add to those points... :p)

I think that one is my favorite. :D

let me add:
We would have a car called Microsoft Car, a lorry called Microsoft Lorry, and so on.

If you bought a car, you'd get a DL Certificate of Authority, which allows you to drive THAT car, and ONLY THAT car! :)

Everyone missed this one - you would need to use a mouse to drive the car (control the movement).. steering wheel out-of-date! :D

I have to agree both of these industries have progressed in their own way. Although cars can never get as cheap as software! Coz its something physical and has to be a life-saving thing when required and thats not the case for software! Anyway, the comment is well understood. Was it true? Did he really make such a comment?

There are many cases where software is a life/death matter.

I personally know of a case where a machinery controls system (running under Windows NT3.51) had a blue screen crash, various safety interlock (hardware) had been disabled, and three people were critically injured.
