Dont expect any help from your consulate/embassy.

If you get into some kind of trouble in a foreign country don't expect any help from your consulate/embassy.

Actually, how should an Embassy help in this case? By paying for the guy's treatment?

So, the embassy should be expected to spend tax-payer's money on one citizen who did not bother to travel with proper medical-insurance?

It should make an exception for sake of one careless guy who has enough money to afford a foreign-trip but ignore those back home that are suffering from homelessness everyday?

I think, stuff can't be expected to work this way... :)

Why not?
but ignore those back home that are suffering from homelessness everyday?

Most of those people are homeless by choice. They refused to use the mechanism put in place by the government to protect them from homelessness.

Most of those people are homeless by choice. You really mean that people stay homeless by choice? :D

What fraction of the homeless population are you addressing in that assertion? ;)
They refused to use the mechanism put in place by the government to protect them from homelessness.Do you think the guy who travelled without medical insurance has not refused to use a mechanism well in place to help him in event of such crises?

What grounds does such a person have to expect an embassy pay for such expense? Off more than a million tourists travelling every year - can you imagine the kind of liability embassies (actually governements) would be expected to take?

I think the situation is just stupid. Made so by the hospital. What do they gain if he will live on the beach, having nothing to pay? If he would be allowed to return to Germany, he might get the money he has to pay for the hospital. Stupid.

it was abit unlikely for a rich government like germany for having such a reaction toward one of his citizens.also it was amazing when i rode the son didnt do anything for his father.

Just my 2 cents. But why to people think they are "owed" or "entitled" to such things. Look at the basis of the Libertarian platform:

1) A Federal government exists solely to deal with internalional issues.
2) State governements exist solely to deal with interstate issues and representation to the federal level.
...
3) An individual is ultimately responsible for him/her self.

I read a few response there and here... what is the problem if local folks helped this guy out? If there are many more out there facing the same - that does not call for no help to anyone for example this guy! What's the problem with helping someone?

We humans have got so tied up between rules and regulations, politics and the so-called "responsibilities" that we have forgotten about helping each other. All help should be provided within "rules". That is the most ridiculous thing this issue has brought to front.

The consulate could have had so easily handled this situation - they could have had provided any temporary help possible and then dealt with the person in their own land. It would have had been so easy! And after all medical insurances "do" expire sometimes!

What other option was this guy offered by them or anyone?

But why to people think they are "owed" or "entitled" to such things.Precisely.

The problem does not lie in people getting help. The problem lies in people assuming that they are entitled to it.
