General request for long time members (and everyone else)
Please remember that not all members of dev-archive have been around for years and that some are still learning the forum software. As such, please be polite when responding to questions that might focus more on how to use the forum rather than on just technical topics.
If a newbie posts something a bit 'off', then politely let them know in a private message so they can fix it, or let a moderator know and they will gladly help.
A few members have made posts that have been seen as a bit 'hostile' towards newbies. Let's keep this place friendly!
Thanks all!
Brad!

Thanx for doing this Brad! :thumb:

Well, my feeling around this is there are 2 types of newbies - one who ask question and vanish and one who stick around. Reminding those who vanish is useless and reminding those who stick around is useless too because they subsequently become familiar seeing other posters' posts. :)
Having said that, I understand the frustration of the members who show "hostility" at times but I think that there isn't anything that really can be done. I have seen newbies who post proper post since their post#1 and I have seen posters with 500/1000+ posts who don't follow the basic guidelines. Strange but true.
I try to ignore those as much as possible and concentrate on the content. Your general request makes sense, Brad! :)

Personally, if it happened by me, I would like mods to let me know it happened, so I can stop being so. Sometimes despite the best intentions to educate people on how to use forum software, it could sound hostile just because of wrong choice of words.

And herein lies a problem. PMs are mostly turned off by default for a new user.
Example. Often, people don't know how to use code tags. When you try to PM them on how to use it, PM is turned off and you are forced to create an unnecessary post on educating the user on how to do it. It is simply adding useless chatter to a technical thread.

I completely agree. IMHO, PM's should default to on. Although I be alot of "newbies" would not bother to look at the indicators on the screen. [this has been given as the justification]
My idea is for people with post counts under (arbitrarily) 25, or if a flag is set by a moderator, then they have to answer a "FAQ Trivia" question :D

What about adding some tips to the registration form? I mean, the last step before completing a registration should be a window with how to post. If that doesn't help, nothing helps. ;)
