Why do people block private messages??
Not publishing you e-m,ail I can understand. But I am at a loss as to why some people have their profiles set to block private messages. It is quite common (for me at least) to send and receive information that is not appropriate to post on the public forums...
Any responses from people who have blocked private messages??

Actually the PM is set to off by Default on the profiles when a member registers..
So all the new members cannot recieve a PM unless the expressly enable it on there profile...

AGREED, but WHY don't they enable it. It is clearly discussed in the FAQ (which we know everyone reads carefully :D )

FAwhat ? ... ;)
Most of them dont even read the AUP ...
# 4 Re: Why do people block private messages??
What is AUP? :D
@TheCPUWizard. I think you have already answered your question. People come to get a solution and then don't stick around much unless they have problems. Those who spend time here, have PM enabled. The people who have a lot of questions to ask never take time to alter their own profile. You will also notice that those who have PM disabled probably were born on November 30th (http://www.dev-archive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=342406&highlight=november+30).

I know, just fustrated. Hoping that at least a few of them will realize it, and enable their PM's... A long shot, but maybe I will win the lottery twice next week also. :D :D :D

I understand. I have been stumped by the OFF by default quite a few times. Most notably, when some one posts a comment on an article, the poster never gets an email when one answers to it. So, quite a few times I have tried to let them know there is a response by sending a PM and , there you go, PM is OFF !!
# 7 Re: Why do people block private messages??
I wonder if new users could get a PM as well as the email confirmation. The PM could mention turning ON PM's to get them from other users.

Why not post this in Suggestions thread ?

If someone can't figure out how to turn PMs on, then they likely won't be able to figure out how to read them. Thus, if you send a PM to then, it will simply get ignored -- which would be more frustrating than not being able to send the PM in the first place.

Brad,
Alas, I have to agree with you there...

But if a person receives a PM, the link is diplayed to him/her on the forums page, it's likely that he/she can find it out while browsing.

I have been here for years, often many hours per day. Occasionally I still miss the indicator in the top right for a few minutes or even (rarely) hours.

But you also forget about the Popup that tells you you've got a msg waiting..

I don't get no stinking pop-ups :D I have them ALL blocked. Even to enter a hyperlink into a post, I have to temporarly allow them for that one instant. :thumb:

What a PopUp is ? ;)

I think it is that type of childrens book, when you open to certain pages, the page "pops-up" into three dimensions. :D
# 18 Re: Why do people block private messages??
I never knew there was a PM system on this board.

And yet you posted this before reading the "Before You Post FAQ..." even though it was mentioned right in the thread you are reading. :(

Any responses from people who have blocked private messages??I deliberately left PM blocked when I first signed up as I wanted to get a feel for the site and the members who frequent it first. But then I forgot to unblock it
Sorted now though, thanks for the reminder.

Thanks to all who responded.
For those who may have "jumped" to this part of the thread...
One of the main reasons I asked this, is that without private messages, it is impossible to send gentle reminders to posters about things such as "code tags", or to bring up issues which may be very related to their problem, but not directly related to the thread [often suggesting they start a new thread for the other topic].
Without PM's, the only way is a post in the forum, which by its nature is blatant, and distracts from the content of the thread.
