[RESOLVED] multimedia edition 2005 & VB6 SP6
VB6 installed, and runs with 0 updates. I try to run SP6 and it fails.
Anybody else had the problem? I even downloaded it again.
Fails after I click the AGREE button. No msg.

I have never seen that problem before. Have you tried installing an older service pack and then the sp6?
# 2 Re: [RESOLVED] multimedia edition 2005 & VB6 SP6
no, I did try windows update before trying again.
I didn't have the problem on my old laptop. sp6 went right in.
i also thought about the runtime for sp6. i might have it already, as my vb.exe's ran before I installed vb6.

Well, you can always see what service pack you have by going to the Help menu and selecting About Microsoft Visual Basic.
# 4 Re: [RESOLVED] multimedia edition 2005 & VB6 SP6
Just tried SP5. Same result. Runs for two seconds, then gives unsucessful message. i think the sp6 runtime is installed, but the help menu shows NO sps.

Did you check the event log?
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> Application

Did a repair off my new dvd, and it seemed to have a problem with net 2.0, but it seems to have booted. couldn't do windows update, but think it was because I was logged in on the laptop. Will try tomorrow.

What if you try .NET 3.0 over 2.0?

Just unregistered, and re-registered everything related to IE and Windows Update, via an email from support.
Started getting Windows Installer 3.1, but it hung up. I sent the ie log back today to see what they suggest.

Round #3
Got an email last night with instructions on how to repair a corrupt Windows Update. Renamed the folder, and reregistered everything related.
Downloaded 3.1 Installer. Install failed with Access Denied, I tried it twice, and in Safe Mode (when it fails, it uninstalls and reboots :( )
Windows Update also fails trying to install 3.1

Well, you can do a system file check. From the command line with XP disk...
sfc /scannow
# 11 Re: [RESOLVED] multimedia edition 2005 & VB6 SP6
I just did a repair install a week or two ago, when trouble started.
The other problem is that it was off the dvd, so I can't use scannow as it won't find the dvd iso. Going to have to burn 2 CD's, if this guy can't get around it.
I think I'm going to write an article with the steps I've followed. I recoginized that Installer 3.1 was the problem from the beginning. Not sure what's behind it.
I'll keep posting updates.

After spending 3 hours on the phone with HP, and then another 2 hours trying various google results, I was ready to give up. Today I got an email, and tried this for the 4th time, and it worked!
1. The Windows Update Temporary folder is corrupted.
Just downloaded 80 updates! Ready to start reinstalling things.
Thanks for the help.

I feel like we have been through so much together. Ha. Glad things are working. Now my VB6 died and I have done everything. Who knows.
# 14 Re: [RESOLVED] multimedia edition 2005 & VB6 SP6
Not out of the woods yet. 80 updates required a restart. Did another Update to make sure, and it found 7-8 more. One of those killed things kind of.
Required reboot, which errored "firewall.cpl" not found...
No firewall in control panel, or security center. running from command line does nothing. can't find it in process list ;( Even copied file from other machine.
Fired off more emails, but was too pissed to mess with it today.
Hope you have better luck!
# 15 Re: [RESOLVED] multimedia edition 2005 & VB6 SP6
M$ just need to put out XP SP3. They have it scheduled to 2009. After SP2 there are already about 88 updates. Since my secondary position is as a tech, I have to rebuild machines at least 2-3 a week. I hate updates.
# 16 Re: [RESOLVED] multimedia edition 2005 & VB6 SP6
Rebooted, and it found 5 updates immediately. tryed, but the ones with XML failed. and one net 1.0 update. What's with those?
I'd almost be ready to beta-test SP3...
Can't find it, though.
# 17 Re: [RESOLVED] multimedia edition 2005 & VB6 SP6
Correction: 2008, not 2009. There is no SP3 to beta test.

Seems resolved VB6 SP6 installed with no problems. Seeing that nothing worked, I guess the tutorial is not needed? ;)
