Whats your view on this: Brits in Singapore mocked rickshaw driver

Hi guys,

Take a look at the following article in Daily Mail:

Brits in Singapore mocked aged rickshaw driver (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=490946&in_page_id=1770)

Basically, here's how the story goes: Three British tourists in Singapore hired and sat on a rickshaw ridden by a 67 yr-old rickshaw driver Lee. The rickshaw is actually meant for at most two passengers. Throughout the journey, the tourists were mocking at Lee who is struggling to pedal the rickshaw. After the journey, the tourists refused to pay the initially agreed price of S$15 and ran off in a cab. The tourists filmed the whole process and posted it up on youtube.

This incident caused an uproar among Singapore netizens. One of the tourists, Bo Davies, later claimed during an interview that "they are insensitive but they are not bullies."

Now, since this forum has people from many different countries, I would like to hear your views on this incident:
1. Do you think the tourists are just being insensitive, or are they really bullies?
2. Is this a case of cultural/value differences between a western and eastern country? Say, if this incident happens in UK, would it creates a similar uproar? Or will the people just treat it as a harmless joke?
3. If this incident happen to your fellow countrymen, how would you feel about it?

Let's have a civil discussion on it. Please refrain from any attacks on nationality or race.

In britain this event would go unoticed.

If comparable, I am sure taxi drivers lose out on fairs on a daily basis, what makes this slightly worse is the unecessary mocking.

Lets face it, some humans suck, and he was on the receiving end this time, but probably wise enough to just let it pass over his head.

We've all seen the final speech from Team America, that probably works quite well here.

As far as I'm concerned they are low life.

I am definitely not from "different" country. Not sure if my opinion is alright for this thread. Just kidding... :D

I like to point out that in Singapore, rickshaw is not longer considered as a public transport since long time ago. It is kept there mainly to serve as one of the tourism attractions. In addition, rickshaws are mainly operated by old folks.

Anyway, here's my take on the incident.
1. Both. All bullies are insensitive. I don't think there is such a sensitive bully.
2. I don't think there is any cultural differences in the definition of bully. All bullies have their funs that is built on top of others miseries. For this case, even if we assume that words from the tourists are considered a joke but I believe the driver still deserved to be justly paid as he was working very hard pedaling for 3 fully-grown men. IMHO, I don't think anyone like to do strenuous work at the age of 67 if one can afford to. The driver has no choice but to make an honest living.
3. Answering this question differently. Just like all of you, I resent this type of behavior even if it happens elsewhere.

I don't think this has anything to do with the nationality of those people. You can find such people in any country, all over the globe.
