How much should we charge?

hi...

i was wondering if you have this problem in your countries...
i work for a company, which pays me for developing asp.net applications...

but at home, i have friends, or another companies who need applications to be developed... and they ask me how much would i charge them...

talking about companies (not friends of mine) how could i know if i'll charge the correct so they dont see it too expensive?

how should i messure it?
hours a day invested on the app?
lines of code?

any suggestions?
thanks in advance...

Personally, I like to follow an old phrase...

Spanish
Nunca hagas negocios con amigos ni parientes.
English
Never do business with friends nor relatives.
It's hard to believe, but business with friends or family can put some serious strain on a relationship. You can charge less to be nice, but if something is done wrong, it might be irreparable.

There are plenty of published studies on salaries for nearly every field in nearly every country. Check out these resources. Then decide if you are "below averge" "average" or "above average". [Remember 50% of all eople are at of below the median level in that field!, dont overrate yourself]

Then it is a fairly simple matter.

In other words, you want to know how much your freelancing is worth. Freelance contract payments are based in many ways. Mostly you need to balance the following.

1. Its worth to the one who is purchasing.
2. The time it takes you to create.
3. Its competitiveness with other products of similarity.

Combine those, and then you should have a good pricing scheme.

Of course it is better for those who read Spanish, than it is for those who do not. ;)

To put it poetically:

Be not a cobbler nor a carver of shafts,
Except it be for yourself:
If a shoe fit ill or a shaft be crooked;
The maker gets curses and kicks.
