Windows 98 sound problem

I reformatted my windows 98 computer, and the sound didnt work for a long time. I figured out I had to update the sound driver, so I did, but now the sound plays really quietly. I turned the volume up to the max, and I tried it with two differnt speakers, and it still is really quiet. Is there any other way to increase the speaker volume, possible past the maximum volume setting in the volume control menu, or is there any reason it is doing this.

It could be multiple things.

1. Not all sound cards power the speakers. If your speakers aren't powered by themselves, you can have this problem. Try a pair of headphones and see how those work.

2. There are multiple channels on the sound mixer you can alter. Make sure that both the main output, and the wav output are up.
